India Medal 1895-1902, with two clasps: 'Malakand 1897' and 'Punjab Frontier 1897-98', awarded to Brigadier-General Edmund William Costello, 22nd Punjabis

Silver medal with, on the obverse, a portrait of Queen Victoria wearing crown and veil, with the inscription, 'Victoria Regina et Imperatrix' (Victoria Queen and Empress). On the reverse, designed by George William De Saulles (1862-1903), the figures of an Indian sepoy and a British soldier holding a standard, with the inscription, 'India' and date '1895'. The campaign medal is suspended on a red and green striped ribbon, with two campaign clasps.

Edmund William Costello was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on the night of the 26 July 1897, during the Malakand campaign on the North West Frontier of India. According to the 'London Gazette', Lieutenant Costello, with the assistance of two sepoys of the 24th Punjab Infantry, covered sixty yards under heavy musket fire, to save a wounded lance-havildar. The wounded man was lying in the open on a football ground overrun by enemy tribesmen. Costello was wounded twice during the battle and twice mentioned in despatches. Costello was invested with his Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on the 2 December 1897. Brigadier General Costello died 7 June 1949 and is buried in St Mark's Churchyard, Hadlow Down, Sussex.

The India Medal, introduced in 1896, replaced the India General Service Medal which had been awarded for various minor campaigns on the subcontinent since 1854. Clasps were awarded for the following engagements: 'Defence of Chitral 1895', 'Relief of Chitral 1895', 'Punjab Frontier 1897-98', 'Malakand 1897', 'Samana 1897', 'Tirah 1897-98', and 'Waziristan 1901-02'.
