Memorial to the Indian Soldier II, stained glass window, 1970
Designed by David Maile and made by G Maile and Sons, 1970.
This stained glass window commemorates the service of Indian Army soldiers during the inter-war period. The central detail depicts an Indian soldier facing forwards and holding a rifle across his body above the lettering 'Afghanistan 1919'. Above this panel is a pain commemorating 'Waziristan 1918-30 and 1937-8'. The top right panel commemorates service on the 'North-West Frontier, 1919-39'. The bottom right panel displays the honour 'Kurdistan 1923'. On the left are panels commemorating the 'Shanghai Defence Force 1927' and the 'Arab Revolt 1920-23'. The coats of arms representing four Commanders-in-Chiefs of the Indian Army, Rawlinson, 1920-25, Birdwood 1925-30, Chetwode 1930-35 and Cassells 1935-41, are visible in the four corners.
