Road repairs, 1919
Photograph, India, North West Frontier, 1919.
A detachment of the 2nd Battalion, 61st King George's Own Pioneers, repairing a road in North West Frontier Province. Maintaining lines of communication was crucial as it allowed military columns to move freely in the tribal areas. In 1919 the British were engaged in a war with the Afghans. The latter were helped by local Pathan tribesmen who were always eager to throw off British rule.
From album of 96 photographs compiled by Lieutenant Frank Allen Hanson, 2nd Battalion 61st King George's Own Pioneers.
