Pauline Milnes, 2019

Oil on canvas by Michael Gallone, 2019.

Pauline Milnes joined the Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC) in 1970 and undertook her Trade Training as Supply Controller at Blackdown Barracks in Deepcut, Surrey. Her first posting was to the Central Ordnance Depot in Donnington, moving to Germany and based at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Headquarters in Rheindahlen where she helped track Russian movements and ensured depots across Germany were adequately supplied. Whilst in Germany, Milnes represented the British Army of the Rhine netball team. Milnes left the WRAC in 1974.

Michael Gallone is an artist who has been studying and teaching at London Fine Art Studios since 2014.

The portrait was produced as part of a series of live painting events at the National Army Museum during its 'Rise of the Lionesses' exhibition in 2019. Five artists produced five portraits of inspirational female veterans who served in either the WRAC or the Auxiliary Territorial Service. The soldiers discussed their military careers and post-military lives while their portraits were being painted.
