Warrant Officer 2 (Staff Quarter Master Sergeant) Catherine Munro MBE, 2019

Oil on canvas by Timothy Daoust, 2019.

Catherine Munro joined the Territorial Army in 1983, serving as a Data Telegraphist with 34 Signal Regiment. She became a Combat Lineswoman, a role very few women held at the time, and regularly represented the TA at shooting competitions, becoming a qualified Marksman. She later transferred to the Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC) as a Physical Training Instructor, serving in the WRAC for 12 years before transferring to the Adjutant General's Corps (AGC). Munro was awarded an MBE in 1996. One of the roles she's most proud of was as United Kingdom Liaison Officer to the United Nations Military Armistice Commission in South Korea. She was the first female British Army soldeir to hold this role.

Timothy Daoust is an artist who specialises in landscapes, portraits and still life. He trained at London Fine Art Studios for six years and now teaches there.

The portrait was produced as part of a series of live painting events at the National Army Museum during its 'Rise of the Lionesses' exhibition in 2019. Five artists produced five portraits of inspirational female veterans who served in either the WRAC or the Auxiliary Territorial Service. The soldiers discussed their military careers and post-military lives while their portraits were being painted.
