Allied Victory Medal 1914-19, awarded to Sergeant Ernest Henry Petts, 'B' Company, 2nd Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment)

Circular, bronze medal designed by William McMillan with a figure of Winged Victory holding a palm branch on the obverse. On the reverse, the inscription, 'The Great War for Civilisation 1914-1919', within a laurel wreath. The medal is suspended from a double rainbow coloured medal ribbon.

Sergeant Ernest Petts (L-8632) arrived in France with the 2nd Battalion, The Buffs on 18 January 1915. He returned to England with frostbite on 18 February 1915. He rejoined his unit on the 28 April 1915 but was killed in action, aged 24, on the 3 May 1915. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records his death on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium.

The Allied Victory Medal was issued in bronze to all those who served in a theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. It was never issued singly, but always with the British War Medal.
