A 6-inch howitzer battery in action, Ypres, 1917

Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917.

The 6-inch 26 cwt howitzer entered service in late 1915. It was developed to replace the 6-inch 25 cwt and 6-inch 30 cwt howitzers which were outclassed by the latest German howitzers. The new gun's combination of firepower, range and mobility made it one of the war's best howitzers.

From an album of 428 photographs compiled by Captain Roderick Macleod, Royal Artillery.
