'Reinforcements going forward through communication trenches to support men holding out at St Julien', 1917

Stereoscopic photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917.

St Julien village, north-east of Ypres, was captured on the first day of the 3rd Battle of Ypres, 31 July 1917, by troops of the 39th Division, including 13th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. For the following two days the troops in the village were subjected to fierce German counter-attacks and at one point it had to be temporarily abandoned. On 3 August however, the village was reoccupied without serious opposition.
