King George VI Coronation Medal 1937 awarded to Lieutenant-General Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart, Army Staff
Circular, silver medal designed by Percy Metcalfe, with, on the obverse, portraits of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. On the reverse, the royal cypher, 'GRI', surmounted by a crown, with the inscriptions, 'Crowned 12 May 1937', and 'George VI Queen Elizabeth'. The medal is suspended on a blue ribbon with white and red vertical stripes at the edges.
Carton De Wiart lost an eye serving in Africa in 1914 and his hand at the Battle of Ypres in 1915. The following year he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and determination at the Battle of the Somme. He survived a total of twelve combat injuries and a plane crash. He died of old age at 83 years old.
