The disbandment parade of 9/14th Punjab Regiment, 1947

Photograph, India, 1947.

The end of British rule in India in 1947 spelled the end of the existing Indian Army and its administration. The division of this force was overseen by Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck. Around 260,000 men, mainly Hindus and Sikhs, went to India and 140,000 men, mainly Muslims, went to Pakistan. The Punjab Regiment was allocated to Pakistan.

From a leatherbound scrap book relating to Brigadier John R Booth, DSO, Indian Army, North West Frontier (1937-1945) and World War Two, Far East (1941-1945).
