Resting in a village, 1906 (c)

Photograph by Colonel O M Harris, Royal Artillery, West Africa, 1906 (c).

A detachment of the Gold Coast Regiment rest in a native village after a days march. Their rifles are neatly stacked and a sentry in full battle kit stands guard over them. No footwear was worn by the soldiers, even on parade, as they never wore boots in civilian life.

From an album of photographs taken and collected by Colonel O M Harris, Royal Artillery, 1897-1914.
