Officer's full dress coatee, worn by Lieutenant-General Sir William Clinton

Sir William Clinton (1769-1846) was involved in a number of secret missions during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1801 he commanded a covert mission to occupy Madeira and was its governor for a year. He fought in Sicily and Spain in 1812-1813 and commanded the 1st Division at the Battle of Castalla (April 1813). His final appointment was as Lieutenant Governor of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea from 1842 until his death.

Full dress uniform was usually worn on ceremonial occasions while undress uniform was worn in less formal circumstances.
