'Troubles of the baggage, on the line of march', 1854 (c)
Watercolour by Second Lieutenant William Thomas Markham (1830-1886), 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade, 1854 (c).
A horse, loaded with a heavy pack, is depicted seated and resisting the pull of a soldier on its bridle. In the background another packhorse is visible, bucking its load. Such problems in the supply chain between Balaklava and the troops in the trenches before Sevastopol were eased by the construction of a rail link.
From an album of watercolours and sketches by Colonel William Markham, 1820 (c) and Second Lieutenant William Thomas Markham, 1854 (c).
