Officer's full dress coatee, 43rd Regiment of Madras Native Infantry, 1846-1848
Scarlet wool cloth coatee with pale yellow wool facings.
In 1848 the 43rd Regiment of Madras Native Infantry was stationed at Cannanore (now Kannur, Kerala, India). The 43rd were one of the last Madras infantry units to be raised. By 1824 there were 50 of these regiments on the strength of the Madras Army. The Madras regiments did not rebel during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), so unlike their counterparts in the Bengal Army, many of them survived the post-revolt reorganisation of the East India Company's forces.
