Coatee, drummer, 1st (or Grenadier) Regiment of Foot Guards, 1843 (c)

Red with blue facings and worsted lace.

This type of coatee was worn until the end of the Crimean War (1854-1856), when they were finally replaced by the much more practical tunic. Drummer's coatees for this period are distinguished by the wings on each shoulder, as well as the lace which ran across the seams of the sleeves and along the back seams. More cheaply made than coatees worn by officers, the buttons for this coatee are made of pewter, rather than gilt metal.
