Originally a London shoemaker, Hewson (1630-1660) worked his way up the ranks of the parliamentarian army during the English Civil Wars (1642-1651) and was knighted by Oliver Cromwell in 1658. He was one of King Charles I's judges and signed the death warrant. With the restoration of the monarchy imminent in 1660, he fled to the continent. He was not tried as he was never caught.
