Grenadier cap, other ranks, Strathspey Highlanders, 1794 (c)

The Fencibles were units raised in Scotland for home defence from 1759 to 1799.

The Grant or Strathspey Fencible Regiment was raised in 1793 by Sir James Grant of Grant, to meet the threat of invasion from revolutionary France. The Strathspey Highlanders mutinied at Dumfries in 1795, the recruits fearing that their period of service would be extended. Two soldiers were executed as a result of disorder that followed. the mutiny. The unit was disbanded in 1799 having served in Scotland for the duration of its existence.

Fencible regiments raised a Grenadier Company, a Light Company and eight battalion companies. Bearskin fur caps, like this one, were only worn by Grenadier Companies.
