Officer's helmet worn by Captain (later Lieutenant-Colonel) William Tyrwhitt Drake, Royal Regiment of Horse Guards, 1815 (c)
Black patented leather skull with gilt brass die struck crest with die struck head of Medusa at front and die struck scallops and sprays of union flowers at sides. Gilt brass scales (many now absent). Black velvet binding. Gilt brass plate, with die struck design of reversed royal cypher 'GR' surmounted by a monarchial crown, all upon a frosted ground, the whole within a border consisting of two bands of laurel leaves. Gilt brass cartouche with die struck inscription 'Royal Horse Guards Blue'. Gilt brass rosette shaped chin scale fitting. Gilt brass fluted and roped plume socket and silk fine cord.
It is thought that Drake wore this helmet when he fought at Waterloo in 1815 with Major-General Edward Somerset's Household Cavalry Brigade.
