Usufzai, 1904 (c)

Oil sketch on paper, attributed to Sir Charles McGregor, 1904.

The Usufzai (or Yusufzais) were one of the largest groups of Pathan tribes on the North West Frontier of India. They were said to be descended from one Mandai, from whose sons Umar and Yusuf originated parts of the same people. Those descended from Umar were relatively peaceful, but the larger Yusufzais tribe included the Iszais of the Black Mountain region, the Malizais, Chagarzais and Swatis, all of whom were regularly engaged by British-Indian forces.
