Rissaldar Major Maun Singh, Sirdar Bahadur and ADC to the Commander in Chief, Delhi, 15 January 1876
Pencil and wash sketch by William Simpson, 1876.
Maun Sing was aide-de-camp to Field Marshal The Rt Hon Robert Napier, 1st Baron Napier of Magdala, GCB, GCSI. He was also the senior native officer of the 9th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry (Hodson's Horse). The title 'Sirdar Bahadur' roughly translates as 'Exalted Chief'. A Sikh of high status, he joined Hodson's Horse early in the Indian Mutiny of 1857 with a squadron of his own dependants. Maun Singh fought at the siege of Delhi, and was in command of the squadron which accompanied Hodson when he seized and shot the three Mughal princes. He also served at Lucknow and during the campaign in Oudh was badly wounded.
