'The Second Descent through the Koojah [sic] Pass', 1839 (c)
Tinted lithograph from bound volume of 26 tinted lithographs, 'Sketches in Afghanistan', 1838-1842, by Louis and Charles Haghe after James Atkinson, published by Henry Graves and Company and J W Allen and Company, 1 July 1842.
In spring 1839 a 12,000 strong British-Indian force, the Army of the Indus, under Sir John Keane invaded Afghanistan via Baluchistan. The five-mile long Khojak Pass was situated on the route between Quetta and Kandahar. The invasion column descended the pass in three stages. Atkinson (1780-1852), who accompanied the force as Superintending Surgeon, here depicts the second descent.
