'The Valley of Maidan', 1839 (c)

Tinted lithograph from bound volume of 26 tinted lithographs, 'Sketches in Afghanistan', 1838-1842, by Louis and Charles Haghe after James Atkinson, published by Henry Graves and Company and J W Allen and Company, 1 July 1842.

Atkinson painted this view of a British officer mounted on a camel bartering with an Afghan fruit seller whilst serving as Superintending Surgeon with the Army of the Indus. The round tower, or Burj, depicted in the picture served as a watch house across the Maidan Valley, which was situated near Kabul.
