Risaldar of the 11th King Edward's Own Lancers (Probyn's Horse), 1908 (c)
Watercolour by Major Alfred Crowdy Lovett (1862-1919), 1908 (c).
Head and shoulders portrait of a Durrani (Afghan) Rissaldar in dress uniform with medals. The dress uniform of this regiment was one of the most extravagant in the Indian Army. In 1864 when the regiment was completely converted to a lancer regiment, a new kurta was authorised, to which gold lace had been generously added. The cummerbund was of red Kashmir wool with gold lace and patterned ends. A dark blue pugri with gold striping was wound around a red and gold embroidered kullah.
This is the original artwork for an illustration in Major G F MacMunn's 'Armies of India', published in 1911.
