Service dress riding breeches worn by Lieutenant-Colonel C P Rooke, 1916

Service dress was a type of khaki field uniform worn by the British Army from 1900. It was the standard combat uniform of the Army during the First World War (1914-1918). Only Officers wore riding style breeches. As they had to purchase their own uniform, they were often worn with long brown boots.

Lieutenant-Colonel C P Rooke served as acting commander of 5th (Special Reserve) Battalion The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) during the war. He also served with 11th (Service) Battalion The Royal Warwickshire Regiment and the Royal Air Force.
