Hindustani Musalman of 1st Duke of York's Own Lancers (Skinner's Horse) and a Musalman Rajput (standing) of 3rd Skinner's Horse, 1910

Watercolour by Major Alfred Crowdy Lovett (1862-1919), 1910.

Skinner's Horse, one of the most famous regiments of the Indian Army, wore a distinctive uniform of yellow and black facings. In contrast, the uniform of 3rd Skinner's Horse consisted of dark blue with red facings. The 1st Duke of York's Own Lancers comprised Muslims only whereas the 3rd Skinner's Horse consisted of one squadron each of Sikhs, Jats, Rajputs and Rangars (Muslim Rajputs).

This is the original artwork for an illustration in Major G F MacMunn's 'Armies of India', published in 1911.
