'Edmund Ludlow Esqr. Lieutenant General', 1650 (c)

Line engraving after Robert White, published for 'Universal Magazine', 1740 (c).

Oval bust portrait, in armour, 1650 (c).

Edmund Ludlow fought for Parliament during the English Civil Wars. He saw action at the Battles of Worcester and Edgehill in 1642, serving with the Earl of Essex's Lifeguard Troop of Horse and Sir Edward Hungerford's Regiment. He was captured while commanding the defence of Wardour Castle in 1643. He was subsequently released as part of a prisoner exchange. Ludlow went on to serve in Sir Arthur Hesilrige's Regiment of Horse at the 2nd Battle of Newbury and was also present at the Siege of Basing House in 1644.

Ludlow went on to serve in the bitter campaign in Ireland from 1651 to 1652. Ludlow refused to support Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector and fell foul of the factionalism that was rife prior to the restoration of King Charles II. Ludlow was among the Parliamentarian officers who had signed the death warrant of King Charles I and, as a regicide, was forced to go into exile. He found refuge in Vevey in Switzerland and, with every attempt to return to England foiled, died there in 1692.
