Star of Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB), awarded to General Sir George Maxwell, 1881
George Vaughan Maxwell (1818-1892) was commissioned into the 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers) in 1838. Having risen to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel he was severely wounded during the second attack on the Redan at Sevastopol on 8 September 1855. It was during Maxwell's services in the Crimea that he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1855. In 1881 having been made a General and a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), Maxwell retired.
In addition to being made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, Maxwell was also awarded the Crimea War Medal 1854-56, with clasps, 'Alma', 'Inkerman', 'Sebastopol'; Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-58, with clasp, 'Central India'; French Legion of Honour, 5th Class,1856; Turkish Order of the Mejidie, 4th Class, 1856; Sardinian War Medal 1856 and Turkish Crimean War Medal 1855.
