Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-58 with clasp, 'Delhi', awarded to Lieutenant (later Major-General) Joseph White Orchard, 33rd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry

Silver, circular campaign medal with, on the obverse, a portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a diadem, with the inscription, 'Victoria Regina'. On the reverse is a robed figure of Britannia, wearing a helmet, holding a wreath and shield with a lion by her side. Above is the word 'India', while below are the dates, '1857-1858'. The medal is suspended on a red and white striped ribbon. The obverse of this medal was designed by William Wyon, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint from 1828, and the reverse by his son Leonard Charles Wyon who also worked at the Royal Mint.

Joseph Orchard (1825-1893), the son of Colonel Joseph Orchard CB, was born in India and educated in Scotland. He returned to India in 1847 and became an ensign in the 33rd Bengal Native Infantry. As a lieutenant he served during the suppression of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), being present at the siege and capture of Delhi in 1857. In 1860 Orchard commanded the 6th Punjab Police Battalion in the expedition led by Brigadier (later Field Marshal Sir) Neville Chamberlain against the Mahsuds on the North West Frontier. He retired with the rank of honorary major-general in 1880.

The Indian Mutiny Medal was approved in 1858 and awarded to officers and men of British and Indian units who served during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). Qualification was widened to civilian and judiciary participants in 1868. The clasp for 'Delhi' was awarded to personnel who participated in the campaign to recapture of Delhi, 30 May 1857 to 14 September 1857.
