This image was one of a number taken of the Queen Victoria's Indian Escort on the opening of the Imperial Institute, South Kensington on 10 May 1893.
A number of different Indian Cavalry Regiments were represented. These include the 1st Punjab Cavalry on the left and the 1st Contingent India Horse (right). Both men carry the rank of Jemadar, equivalent to a Sergeant. They both wear full dress uniform. They wear turbans of regimental pattern, and kurtas. Both wear puttees - long pieces of cloth that are wound round the lower legs to protect the wearer from mud. The man on the left wears a qualified marksman's badge on his lower left sleeve, as well as long service chevrons, denoting at least six years service, with good conduct.
