Group portrait of William Carter with his sons, 1890 (c)

William Carter, seated in civilian dress, had joined The Buffs in 1857, becoming a Colour Sergeant in 1866, then Quarter Master Sergeant and Sergeant Major of 45th Brigade Depot, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment in 1875. He served until 1890 when he was the Sergeant Major of 'K' Coy, 2nd Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment).

Carter is seated outside, with a dog lying at his feet, with his sons, Hugh Harry and Percy Lewis. Captain Ernie Carter MC and Lewis Carter are also pictured. Percy died of disease in Bloemfontein in 1900 during the Boer War (1899-1902), and Hugh Harry, serving with The Buffs, was killed in France, in October 1918.
