Service dress tunic, officer, worn by Major Pelly, Auxiliary Territorial Service, 1941 (c)

Khaki, serge single breasted tunic made by the House of Lewis, F K Lewis and Son, 32 Bridge Street, Bristol, 1941 (c).

The Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) was established in September 1938. While women were still not allowed to fight, they returned to supporting roles during the Second World War (1939-45). In July 1941 the ATS was given full military status, meaning its members were no longer volunteers.
