'The Grand Review on Sydenham Common', 1792 (c)

Coloured etching by and after Isaac Cruikshank. Published by S W Fores, No 3 Piccadilly, London, 28 June 1792.

This print, a satire on the proclamation against seditious meetings of May 1792 and the subsequent military review at Sydenham in June, depicts King George III, William Pitt, Edmund Burke and others chasing the Prince of Wales and his political allies, Charles James Fox, Lord Stanhope and Richard Sheridan, who has fallen on his back during their retreat. The latter three believed that the Prince of Wales was entitled to exercise sovereignty during the King's illness. They were also initially sympathetic with the aims of the French Revolution. The King, a political conservative, was however deeply suspicious of the Prince's motives and his adherence to Fox and other radical politicians.
