'Embarkation of the 93rd Highlanders at Plymouth, March 1st 1854, in the Great Steam Ship Himalaya'
Coloured lithograph after artist unknown, No 4 in the series 'Going to the War', published by Read and Co, London.
The 93rd (Highland) Regiment of Foot are shown being rowed out in small boats to the modern steamship the SS 'Himalaya', commandeered from the Orient and India Line by the government. Larger and faster than many of the ships used to transport the Crimean expeditionary force, the SS 'Himalaya' conveyed the entire regiment to the Bosphorus in under two weeks.
