A Soldier of the Queen, 1960 (c)

Chromolithograph recruiting poster, after Harry Scarbright, published 1960 (c).

A young infantry corporal wearing Aertex jungle green tropical battle dress and bush hat, stands with his sleeves rolled up amongst jungle foliage whilst slinging his L1A1 self-loading rifle over his shoulder. The scene might be in Malaya as the 'Emergency' in that country had just ended when this poster was produced. During their service in Malaya British soldiers had to learn how to live and fight in the tropical forests. Training occurred at a Jungle Warfare School, which also worked out the best tactics based on experience gained in the field.
