Indian soldiers in training, 1943 (c)

Photograph, World War Two, 1943 (c).

Sepoys of the 17th Dogra Regiment climb a scramble net during their training at the regimental centre in Jullunder, India. The Dogra Regiment was recruited entirely of Dogra Rajputs, high caste Hindus from the foothills of the Himalayas between the Jhelum and Sutlej rivers in the Punjab. It was one of the few regiments which was composed of a single ethnic or religious class, the majority of Indian Army units being made up of mixed 'classes'.

From a collection of 40 photographs showing scenes from the daily life of recruits to the 17th Dogra Regiment during World War Two (1939-1945).
