Recruits of 17th Dogra Regiment awaiting kit inspection, Jullunder, India, 1944 (c)

The British referred to all those who enlisted from Rajput hill states as Dogras, and the first regiment of Dogras was added to the Bengal Army on 20 April 1887 at Sialkot. During World War Two the regiment fought with distinction against the Japanese in Malaya (1941-1942) and Burma (1942-1945).
