A British Army patrol, consisting of a Humber armoured car and a Land Rover, passing through a barricade, 1972 (c)
Photograph, Northern Ireland, 1972 (c).
The Humber one-ton armoured personnel carrier or 'Pig' became the most common armoured vehicle to be used by the British Army in Northern Ireland, being readily adapted for a variety of roles, including medical evacuation. Originally designed for service in the Malayan Emergency of 1948-1957, by the early 1960s it had been declared obsolete. Many had to be brought out of storage, or retrieved from scrap yards.
From a collection of nine photographic prints relating to Army operations in Northern Ireland during the 1970s.
