India General Service Medal 1854-95, with clasp, 'North West Frontier', awarded to General Sir William Montagu Scott McMurdo, GCB
Silver medal with an effigy of Queen Victoria and inscription, 'Victoria Regina', on the obverse; on the reverse, the figure of Winged Victory crowning a kneeling figure with a laurel wreath; red and dark blue ribbon with clasp, 'Northwest Frontier'.
William Montagu Scott McMurdo (1819-1894) was commissioned in 1837 into the 8th (or the King's) Regiment of Foot. Later he served in the 22nd (the Cheshire) Regiment of Foot and the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot before transferring as a captain to the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot (or Ross-shire Buffs) in 1843. Having seen active service under Sir Charles Napier (whose daughter he married) in Scinde and later on the North West Frontier of India, on 2 February 1855 McMurdo, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, was appointed Director General, Land Transport Corps in the Crimea.
His record in command was mixed, largely because of the indifferent personnel with which he had to work, and the state of the Corps was criticised by his locum tenens, Colonel Edward Wetherall. Nevertheless, on his return home he was promoted Colonel and appointed aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria. He later served in India and Ireland, and retired as a general in 1881.
