Entraining at Kohat, 1919

Photograph, 3rd Afghan War (1919).

Kohat lay at the end of the Miranzai Valley and was located about 30 miles from Peshawar. When the Afghans invaded the Kurram and threatened the British post at Thal, reinforcements under Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer travelled by train via the narrow gauge railway through Kohat to Thal. Their journey through the Miranzai and on into the Kurram was successful; the garrison at Thal was eventually relieved on 2 June 1919.

One of 267 photographs probably compiled by Private A E Neal, 2/6 Bn the Royal Sussex Regiment, India 1916-1919.
