Men of the Grenadier Guards at Cairo railway station in Egypt. 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards took part in General Sir Horatio Herbert Kitchener's campaign for the re-conquest of the Sudan. The Anglo-Egyptian force made its way south to Khartoum by rail and river. The 1st Battalion fought at the decisive Battle of Omdurman on 2 September 1898. The battalion left Egypt in October 1898.
