Main square of the old Belgian town of Mechelen (Malines), 1944
Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North West Europe, 1944.
The Belgian town of Mechelen, located midway between Antwerp and Brussels, was liberated by the Allies in early September 1944. The town's position as a railways nexus had led the Nazis to site a notorious transit camp there for deportations to Auschwitz.
