Ashanti Medal, with clasp for 'Kumassi', awarded to Sepoy Jiwa Singh, 15th (The Ludhiana Sikh) Regiment of Bengal Infantry, 1900
Circular, silver medal designed by George William de Saulles, with, on the obverse, a portrait of King Edward VII and the Latin inscription, 'Edwardvs VII Rex Imperator' (Edward VII King Emperor). On the reverse, a lion surveys his territory from a rocky outcrop as the sun rises. In the foreground are a shield and two spears, one broken, with a scroll bearing the campaign title, 'Ashanti' below. The ribbon consists of two green, and three black stripes.
The Ashanti Medal was established in 1901 and awarded to combatants, in silver, and non-combatants, in bronze. This medal was issued to the defenders of the garrison at Kumasi in the Gold Coast during the 4th Ashanti War (1900-1901) and to the personnel of two relief columns sent to aid them after they had been surrounded by a native uprising.
