Lance Dafadar Gakkar (Punjabi Musalman), 38th Prince of Wales's Own Central India Horse, 1908 (c)

Watercolour by Major Alfred Crowdy Lovett (1862-1919), 1908 (c).

The 'classes' (ethnic groups) usually recruited into the Central India Horse were Sikhs (two squadrons), Pathans (one squadron) and 'Musalman' (Muslim) Rajputs (one squadron), so the presence of a Gakhar is unusual. In July 1908 the regiment was stationed at Agar.

This is the original artwork for an illustration in Major G F MacMunn's 'Armies of India', published in 1911.
