Troopship, 1916 (c)

Photograph by W B Bowyer, Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars, World War One, Egypt, 1916 (c).

This vessel is painted with 'dazzle camouflage', a paint scheme consisting of geometric shapes in contrasting colours. Although the camouflage did not conceal the ship, an enemy viewing it through a submarine periscope would struggle to estimate its type, size, speed and heading.

One of 47 photographs taken by W B Bowyer, Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars, Egypt and Palestine, 1915-1918.
