HMS 'Vulcan', shown here with soldiers of the Rifle Brigade on deck, was an iron-hulled screw frigate. Launched in 1849, she was converted to a troopship in 1851. During the Crimean War (1854-1856) she was also used to transport sick and wounded soldiers and for the movement of Russian prisoners to Constantinople.
