'Recollections of the Great War', by Emmy Gaunt, Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, April 1940
Emmy Gaunt enlisted at Leeds in early 1917. After being medically examined as fit for service, she was inoculated and vaccinated. She then undertook training at the Connaught Club in London. She then proceeded to Boulogne, among the first khaki clad women to arrive on the continent. Her account describes meeting French civilians, Australian and American soldiers, retreating during the German Spring Offensive, concert parties, air raids at Abbevile, an inspection by General Pershing, the Armistice and the journey home.
