456 letters, air graphs, airmails, postcards and notes (1312pp) written by Valerie Ryshworth-Hill (nee Erskine Howe) to her fiancé, later husband, Lt Col Anthony Ryshworth-Hill, between 1942 and 1945 covering her recruitment into the Auxiliary Transport Service (November 1942), training and duties as an ambulance driver, despatch rider and staff car driver with 597 Command (M) Transport Company RASC, Salisbury Plain, and Winchester (March 1943 - January 1945), and with 601 Command (M) Transport Company, Winchester (January - September 1945), including details of her duties maintaining the vehicles, motorbike training, as driver of staff cars, including for 1/4 Hampshire Regiment, details of her billets and colleagues, and observations on army life and training exercises, together with their courtship, engagement and marriage, her response to an early miscarriage while serving with the ATS (April 1945), and plans to join him in Europe following her release from the ATS (September 1945). Also included with the collection are notes sent to him in parcels, cartoons and small portrait photographs, and letters sent to him by her from Ankara (November 1963 - April 1964) where she was teaching English.
