Typed letter written by Capt Robert Francis Thomson, 28th Light Cavalry to G M Young, 25 Jun 1925; letter refers to when Thomson escorted a group of Austrian, German, Hungarian and Bolshevik prisoners from Ashkabad to Birjand in 1918, and is a defence against claims of mistreatment made by one of the prisoners, Stump; Thomson transcribes letters and orders he gave and received at that time, and argues that his actions were conditioned by the resources available to him and the commands he was given that Stump was to be treated as dangerous; associated with World War One, Persia (1914-1918). Saddle bag, belonging to Alexander Murray, 8th Earl of Dunmore, Viscount Fincastle VC and given to Lt R S Moss-Blundell, February 1902; there is a bullet hole at the bottom interior side of the saddle bag, the bullet hole has been stitched to preserve the hole; the bullet killed Viscount Fincastle's horse from under him during the Tirah Campaign during a rescue under heavy fire to retrieve Lt Greaves, Lancashire Fusiliers who had been wounded and was surrounded; Lt Greaves died during the rescue as did one of the officers, Viscount Fincastle was awarded the VC for his actions; associated with India, North West Frontier, Tirah Expeditionary Force (1897-1898).
