| One digital photograph of J Cutler carrying the folded stretcher, during Op Herrick 8, 2008.Cutler was tasked with carrying this stretcher during deployment on Op Herrick 8 with 6 Platoon, B company, 2nd battalion of the Parachute Regiment. Before their deployment on OP Herrick 8, his platoon decided to buy a lightweight and easy to deploy stretcher. Cutler was tasked with carrying the stretcher throughout the tour and used it on several occasions. Most notably during the contact in which dog handler L/cpl Rowe and his dog Sasha both lost their lives. It was used to casevac some of the lads that had been pinned down and injured during that contact. It was used to help move injured soldiers in the initial phase of a casevac. Jason Lee Kenneth Cutler.D.O.B is 24/05/1985.Born in Plymouth.'I served with the 2nd Battalion the Parachute regiment. I joined depot in August 2006 and joined the 2nd Battalion the Parachute regiment in February of 2007. My army number is/was 25197177 and I was a Private throughout my 4 years 8 moths that I served. I was put on a Pashtu course (with 8 other 2nd Battalion the Parachute regiment lads and 3, 5th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland lads) 11 months prior to deployment of OP Herrick 08. This is one of the reasons I was tasked with carrying the stretcher for 6 Platoon as I was put into the platoon a few months before deployment and I was expected to stay close to Lieutenant Davidson whilst out on patrol. After several weeks being attached to Lieutenant Davidson I was put within the sections and usually put as point man due to my Pashtu. The reason the platoon decided to invest in the stretcher was to expedite the casualty evacuation process from the front line. Since the stretcher bearers were usually attached the Company Sergeant Majors section they were to the rear of the patrol. The stretcher is lighter than an issued one and easy to roll up and unravel. This meant a quicker deployment during a contact or when required. One such patrol it was used on was the 24th of July in the patrol where Lance Corporal Kenneth Michael Rowe of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and his dog Sasha both lost their lives. Prior to the contact, a small machine gun section had detached from the main patrol and were patrolling parallel to the lead section that I was point man of. We became stationary next to some compounds and a maise field (due to the time of year the maise was well over 7 feet hight). We were engaged by small arms fire and Rocket propelled grenades. The small machine gun section was pinned down and after several minutes a group of us managed to get to them. Private Fraiser (support company) was shot in the foot and so we used the stretcher to casevac him towards the CSM group and the waiting medics and then from there he was put on the issued stretcher until he made it back to FOB Inkerman and a chinook back to Bastion.'. | Photographs | 2025-08-14-2 |
