Two guidons, 1795-1796; First or King's Guidon; associated with 21st Light Dragoons; scarlet with buff design; Second or Regimental Guidon; associated with 31st Light Dragoons; buff with scarlet design; the term 'guidon' is a corruption of the old French 'guyd homme', the leader of a group of horsemen. In the seventeenth century each troop of cavalry had its own guidon but by the latter part of the eighteenth century each regiment usually carried between two and four guidons irrespective of the number of troops.
